about

Commitment matters. The ebb and flow of today’s music scenes are fast-paced and brittle. What comes to have meaning, and who comes to have meaning are those who cut their own way and are left standing as the waves pass. Those waves have been particularly strong when it comes to the popular acceptance of disco and its relative associations. In the US this has been driven by figures connected to, and promoted by, the DFA label. In Europe one character who has continually pushed the no-wave disco sound - under his Headman & Manhead cloaks - has been Robi Insinna. His quiet reward has been seeing the kids jump on the wagon.

It is in this guise that his focus has been consumed over the last twelve months, releasing his 4th acclaimed album - 1923 - which now bears an adapted fruit in the single „Blue Boys / Blue Girls“. The track appeared in instrumental form on the record and now features two alternate vocals - one male, one female. The overall sound feels like a stripped back Thompson Twins production re-cut for a 2011 club with phasers and huge reverbs in vamp mode. Vocals on the „Blue Girls“ cut come from Jackie, lead singer of Newcastle new-wave garage band Retriever, and on „Blue Boys“ Robi is joined by Dave Okumo from the highly tipped London outfit The Invisible who has taken time out from hanging with Elton John to deliver these vocals.

Remixes come from Chmmr, who recently spread fire with his 12” on Oslo’s Luna Flicks Records, Richard D. Clouston and Mickey.

Relish still paints itself as somewhat of a project rather than a label, with a defined ethos, with special editions and visual. The label keeps busy discovering and releasing international talents. ... more
